The primary program of Oregon Scottish Rite Clinics is intensive, one-on-one speech therapy for preschool children. However, we've also made a commitment to advancing the knowledge of health professionals that work with young children as well as the continuing education of our clinic speech-language pathologists.

Medical Residency Rotation Program

The assessment of hearing and language disorders in children is something that is often overlooked in residency training for familiy practice and other physicians. Oregon Scottish Rite Clinics provides a unique opportunity for medical residents to observe therapy in our program. Current partners include the Oregon Health & Sciences University School of Medicine, and the Providence Milwaukie Hospital residency program. Residents have the opportunity to observe therapy and to discuss speech-language therapy in depth with our clinicians. They are also provided with a detailed handbook giving them an overview of the principles of hearing and language disorders in children, screening for those disorders and effective treatment.

According to Dr. Eric Walsh, Director of Residency Training at Oregon Health & Sciences Unviersity School of Medicine, "the feedback that we have received from our residents about this education opportunity has been superior. By providing this opportunity to Family Practice residents, Oregon Scottish Rite Clinics has magnified its efforts many fold by training future doctors to recognize and appropriately refer these crucial problems in children."

If you have questions or if your residency program would like to take part in this opportunity in Portland, Klamath Falls, Bend, Roseburg or Medford, contact our Executive Director, Dr. Philip Levinson, for more information.

Post Masters Fellowship with OHSU's Child Development & Rehabilitation Center

Each year Oregon Scottish Rite Clinics and OHSU Child Development and Rehabilitation Center (CDRC) jointly fund a one-year Post-Masters Degree Clinical Fellowship in Speech Pathology. The clinical fellow spends three days a week at CDRC evaluating individuals in an interdisciplinary setting. They spend two days a week at the Scottish Rite Clinic's Portland office providing Speech-language therapy to pre-school children. This experience is acceptable as the Clinical Fellowship year required by ASHA and the Oregon Speech Pathology and Audiology Licensing Board.
